Season 8 of MLP hasn't been good. So much that most of the episodes are either repeats from previous seasons or just unsatisfying despite some good things in them, like bringing back fan favorites. Of course, we all know that fanservice won't save an episode, or even a season.

With the final season underway, it's quite obvious that the writers are trying to not repeat the same mistakes it did with this one and are trying to make the finale a satisfying viewing pleasure. But, will they?

1. The Beginning of the End
The previous season premieres have been underwhelming. It's quite obvious that the writers are all about setting up the finale, but it's payoff are equally underwhelming. Enter the Beginning of the End where the writer's actually give a damn and actually make the premiere interesting. It still suffers from the setting up this arc that is forgotten until the finale. It does bring back Sombra who feels like a completely different character. I mean, it's not bad, it's just we're more used to him being this dread lord who doesn't even need to speak to make a good impression, but they made him fabulously evil, so it's fine i guess? So, this premier's perfectly well. Too well.

You see, when we get into it, the whole premiere feels like a finale and in fact, the story would've worked better if it was used for a finale instead. Sombra mind controlling a whole town and everyone's own families to fight against them is a brutal tactic for someone whose tied to the philosophy of friendship with the tinge of pacifism. But, it should've have taken this long (or even to soon) to get this kind of threat.

So, yeah, the premiere is good, but still underwhelming since we get a plot that should've been worked with seasons ago and the overall feel would've worked better for a finale instead.

2. Uprooted
Oh, hey the writers remembered the Young Six are still relevant. The young six as characters don't exactly do much other than do the roles that could've been written for the mane 6 without the School of Friendship thing. They're not bad, just bland and often times i underused as they're created just so the school arc could have some protagonist other than the mane six.

Uprooted is another underwhelming experience as it repeats the plot of Castle Sweet Castle, where instead of trying to make someone's new home feel like their old home, the students are bickering over the memorial of a tree that is somehow alive. Even the conclusion (if you could even call it that) has them used the tree's remains to build a tree house, which is then turned into a fancier castle-looking tree house and the episode vaguely ends stating that the tree will somehow live. Then what's the point of having the plot be about them making a memorial?

This is a weird episode, and not in a good or bad way, just somewhere in between. I get the feeling that the writer's just wrote this just so the young six can do something other than cameos, but a little effort would've been much preferred especially it's for characters that are underused.

3. Sparkle's Seven
For a 200 'special', this is relatively fine. Decent, even. Of course, with an episode being the 200th, surely there are people who'd say this should been another Slice of Life, but we already have a Slice of Life. In fact, the show has been pandering a little into fanservice ever since they aired the 100th episode and that the company that made the show and the fandom based on the show almost feel like the exact same entity at this point.

But, whatever. This episode is all about having the voice actors getting what they want, in which is having fun with their own ideas. An episode about a simple heist feels like a breath of fresh air and a well deserve break from fan servicing to audience.

4. The Point of No Return
An episode about Twilight overreacting about forgetting to do the thing she thought she has done? Sold. Like i said before, it feels nice watching an episode that is reminiscent from older seasons. And i really liked the moral of 'being perfect doesn't make you happy'. It's a decent episode with a wonderful moral.

5. Common Ground
Well, it ain't a series finale without bringing back fan favorites. Is Quibble a fan favorite? Who knows. Common Ground is an alright episode. It does what MLP used to do of tackling complex subjects, in this case, a guy impressing his girlfriend's daughter about a sport she likes. And this is a good episode for kids who have stepparents who are often unfairly stereotyped as evil people. Likely, because everyone remembered Cinderella and didn't want some asshole pretending to be their parents.

6. She's all Yak
As much as i ship Gallbar, i find this episode cute. The token white boy asking the least favorite minority girl out to prom is a rare premise i like, since last season we get a 'racists are bad' premise that isn't exactly well written as the writers are busy focusing on setting up the hype for the finale. Just an adorable episode about a guy and a girl and that is coming from a person whose into gay shippings.

7. Frenemies
Oh, hey. The arc about the villains teaming and working together is a thing. Thanks for reminding us that.
Seriously, that's a part of the problem with the writers focusing too much on hyping up the finale. Arcs are often the series' weakest point as they just set it up in the beginning only for it to be forgotten midway until the finale kicks in.

Also, the premise of Tirek, Cozy and Chrysalis working together is another overuse trope done badly here. Since, the show is about 'friendship' shouldn't we already have an episode about working together seasons ago? But, hey, these are villains, of course they're gonna turn their backs against each other are planning on betraying Grogar because hype reasons.

8. Sweet and Smoky
Garble has become of a joke character as of recently. He started out as a typical teen bully, only to appear in later seasons just so Spike can have someone to lecture about friendship and such. Enter Sweet and Smoky where it turns out that everyone's new favorite dragon is related to the local bully. Which is honestly a surprise i really didn't expect and find it hilariously awkward that a friend happens to be the sibling of a person i dislike.

Of course, we get the usual villain redeeming stuff going on, but Garble wasn't that much of a threat as he's more of a minor antagonist than an arc villain. So, his crime to petty bullying is passable than gaslighting a whole town into believing a philosophy you don't actually believe in. Plus, he actually did some effort on changing his ways to save his unborn fellow species even if it were to humiliate him. That's a better attempt than, 'I'm killing billions because i'm sad. Stop being sad. Okay, let's ignore my massive list of terrible unredeemable crimes'. Also, Fluttershy is still best pony.

For a 'final' episode about the dragonlands, this one is passable. We could've get something grand like having the bigger dragons to appear, but we already have too much grand stuff like fan favorites returning, so it's alright.

9. Going to Seed
While this episode did another repeat of 'Hey, quit being such a workaholic and have fun once in a while', it's mostly fine. In fact, getting a different variation is better than getting the exact same thing but crappier. Apple Bloom and AJ going on a fun hunt is fun.
Also, Bic Mac deserves some love.

10. Student Council
Before i wanna talked about this episode, i'm gonna talk about Starlight Glimmer.
Starlight has been of a problematic character ever since she first appeared back in season 5. She was introduce as an interesting villain with interesting motives. She was a nice change for villains as she might have some sort of point, but that went to waste in the finale when she revealed her motives are caused by her friend moving away. Okay, what part of my friend move away because he has to study turns into brainwashing a town into a cult that believes a philosophy she doesn't believe in herself? Yeah, we get that friends moving away is sad, but experiencing unfair things at an early age is a part of life. Reaching adulthood where you kept the delusion that inequality is bad to the point of starting a cult about it is a little overboard, don't you think?

Ever this huge blow of a waste, she became a new addition to the main cast which doesn't help her case. While, Sunset officially earn her place to be a main character, Starlight's feels forced. Episodes about her are often feel like her role was originally written for someone else or that the plot beats itself just so everything she did is alright, when in actuality it's the opposite.

Student Council is another Starlight episode, where she tries to fix a problem, only for it to get worse, but in he end, it's all just a big misunderstanding of a sorts because the plot is trying to excuse itself for her sake. It also bought back fan favorites, because finale reasons.

Again, this episode wouldn't be any different if the roles were change to those of the mane six. Sure, Fluttershy could have lectured the cockatrice into not turning them into stone, but the outcome wouldn't be any different. Also, i like Trixie in this since the last episode about her and Starlight has trade away her possessions without warning and saying like it's no big deal and Trixie sniping at her is a satisfying watch.

Not a great episode, not because of Starlight but, it would've better if the writers didn't forced her to be the center of it, or even created her in the first place.

11: The Last Crusade
The CMC have been underused recently. Like the young six, they are pushed aside for the sake of hyping up the finale, and are only bought in because 'every season must have an episode centering Discord, Spike, CMC, etc'. The Last Crusade answers the not-needed-to-be-answered question of 'What happened to Scootaloo's parents?' and it did. Turns out they were too busy doing Indiana Jones shenanigans to spend time with their daughter who opts to stay with her implied lesbian aunts.

For an episode that is about Scootaloo's parents, it feels unsatisfying. Since the conflict is about Scootaloo's decision to stay on ponyville with her friends or move with her parents (who have been absent in most of her life) to spend time with them, the episode would've great if it ended with Scoots moving in with her parents and CMC confirming they'll stay best friends even if they're separated, which fits with the overall season being the final one. Heck, this would even be a great allegory of friends moving to a different state. But, no. She's staying and there's no point of this episode to be made other than bringing in Scootaloo's parents all of the sudden.

12: Between Dark and Dawn
Celestia and Luna have been quite active in the last seasons. They're not exactly great characters (because reasons) and they're generally fit better if they are mentor like characters, which they were. Until Luna appeared in season 2 and fans want more of her. So, the writers opt onto making episode about either her or Celestia, and generally they aren't so great as they could have potential to be good episodes, but nah, fan service.

Between Dark and Dawn is a fine episode, while it's obvious that it has a lot of fan pandering, it's generally alright. Heck, Celestia and Luna having a falling out in the middle and making up at the end does feel force, but it's fine here, because they're sisters and family does fight and make up most of the time.

It does suffer from the whole 'Twilight running a kingdom shtick' which is another arc the writers are making up, but it's fun to watch stressing Twilight instead friendship preaching Twilight.
So, it's an alright episode.

13: The Last Laugh
An episode about bringing back a fan favorite character? Neigh. An episode about creator's block? Yay! This is one of the rare best episodes that bought back a fan favorite character as it uses that character for an interesting story instead of just baiting to the fans. The plot is both simple and complex and i really like the balance between the two.

14: 2, 4, 6, Greaaat
This is not a great episode. It's another Parent Map and Parental Glideance with Rainbow is mostly correct, she is treated as she is in the wrong. Twilight volunteered Rainbow to do a thing she has no interest in and even knew how'd she'll react. But, the episode shits itself into making this a good thing when it isn't.

You can't just force someone to do a thing you like, that only makes them do the opposite even more. Heck, we already have a 'we're still friends but hate each other's activity' kind of premise back in season 8 with End in Friend. Has the person who wrote this episode even watch the series?

15: A Trivial Pursuit
Okay, how many times do we get a 'winning is not everything, what's important is having fun' episode? We even had a movie about the whole thing even that bullshits it's way in the end. Also, didn't we just had an episode about Twilight learning to let go of having a perfect record of a sorts?

The entire episode, although fun, feels like filler because the writers are out of ideas other than building up for the finale or repeating story ideas like they did with last week's episode.

16: The Summer Sun Setback
Continuity is when an episode acknowledges a thing that happened in previous episodes, and fans seem to praise it for existing for some reason. Continuity isn't exactly special, it can good with characters acknowledging previous morals (which can be ironic for obvious reasons) and it can be a bad thing as it doesn't do much aside from addressing, more or so reminding the audience that there still this arc going with the villains, Grogar's bell and the sisters retiring.

That's what this episode feels, just one big continuity and set up for the finale.

17: She Talks to Angel
It's obvious that the writers are out of ideas that they had to do a Freaky Friday episode, which is common in shows. While the episode itself isn't exactly bad, i mean, it has Fluttershy as the lead. But a lot of the decent episodes this season are just meh.
I already said this before, but the writers are out of ideas other than their Endgame hype ending, so they just repeat previous episodes from other seasons, even in this one.

18: Dragon Dropped
Before i talk about the episode, let me talk about Sparity. I used to ship Sparity back when i was very young (and stupid) and when i was into season 1 of MLP. I paired them because i was into the whole Interspecies Romance thing. Anyways, cut to years later when i found out about the whole 'pedophile' problem this ship has, so i accept the idea that Spike is aged up in fan stories and comics, because the idea of a grown person having an attraction towards a child is kinda gross.

Dragon Dropped attracts a lot of these shippers, because in this community, people being friends with each other equals shipping. Like what i said in She Talks to Angel, Trivial Pursuit, etc, the episode is a repeat of Make New Friends, But Keep Discord, where Person A and Person B are friends, Person B starts hanging out with Person C, and Person A feels either left out or abandoned, or jealous. Here, Rarity behaves really weird, and also kinda creepy. Stalking spike and bribing him into spending time with her. You know, stuff that people in this community would find normal, right?

Anyways, this episode is gross and bad, because A, Rarity is obsessed over Spike and B, the writers are lazy as hell that they just wanted to quit writing for the series.

19: A Horse Shoe-In
Oh, hey, an episode that has Starlight in it and it doesn't suck (for the most part). Anyways, the episode is reminiscent to All Bottled Up, Trixie is making Starlight mad, and Starlight calls her off for her behavior. Anyways, the point of this episode is that 'When an important job needs to be done, the decision should be based on who's qualified, even if it's not your friend', which is kinda great. But then, in the end Starlight gives Sunburst (her childhood friend) the job and Trixie her former job of Student Counsel which kinda ruins the point entirely. Another problem (which is also the series' problem) is the characters' over-reliance on friendship. Starlight is worried about her friendship with Trixie if she tells her she sucks ass of being a Vice Headmare.

Anyways, there's this one point in the episode in which Trixie is sticking up for Gallus for being neglected by Grandpa Gruff. If the episode was all about Trixie helping Gallus' neglecting guardian problem, this would've been a great episode. Heck, since the theme is about 'FwEnShIp', you might as well have two characters you at least expect to become friends.

20: Daring Doubt
I honestly don't like this episode. It's one of the usual recent habits the writers have of ruining things that were fine and they should've either left it as it is, or get better writers. I'm not the only one on this. When the premise is about Daring Do was the 'real' bad guy and her enemies were redeemed because they were protecting the artifacts and temples that she was stealing and destroying- like. Can someone fire the one who wrote this? Anyway, Fluttershy's also in this episode and it's obvious that her role could've been that of Twilight's with her excusing the villains' previous actions just so she can help them without a second thought that they might be using her. It's best to think that this episode never exist.

21: Growing Up is Hard to Do
This episode feels like fanfiction, in which the idea of 'what if the CMC were adults' is something that we don't actually need to explore as we already have a CMC episode about becoming mature. As well as failed attempt to make an interesting episode about moving on. It's clear and obvious that the writers are out of ideas, and to hide that, they just pick one popular fan idea just so the bronies wouldn't notice their laziness.

22: The Big Mac Question
Honestly, the writers are out of ideas at this point and just shove in a last minute proposal and wedding episode featuring a couple whose marriage doesn't need to be seen, because we already two wedding episodes. It's not good or bad in anyway, it's boring.

Now the (not so) important thing about this episode is the reveal that Lyra and Bonbon are a canon lesbian couple. However, the thing here is this wouldn't have happen if they were a fan favorite. Like i said in my previous entries, DHX does the bare minimum of doing fan servicing and would be praise the bronies for making a reference to a popular thing in the fandom. And the thing here is, if DHX really wanted to make another wedding episode and also wanted praise from the brony community for canonizing a popular ship, then why isn't the episode about Lyra and Bonbon wanting to marry but are concerned about what the others say about the fact they are both mares?

Like the said before, people love this episode only for that one background event and nothing more, because that's essentially what DHX has been doing this past few years. Getting praise for their laziness.

23: The Ending of the End
Good lord this finale was shit. To be honest with you, MLP:FiM has been draining the excitement out of me to care about whether this'll be the last season or not because the series has been dragging on to which they should have ended at least back in season 5. This'll be split into parts discussing each problem i have with the finale and series as a whole.

First off, what the fuck have then done to Discord? He's been a major character this season, but should the writers at least put any effort onto him? Discord has always been this trickster mentor type of character whose intentions are hard to read (let alone interpret because fans couldn't keep their headcanons to themselves) and what the writers did here is just pure and plain intellectual carelessness. Not even the first few minutes in, the writers put out the twist that Grogar was Discord all along, and that's when the confusion turns into rage. If you recall back the episodes featuring the villains and Grogar, it gives an impression that Discord was trying to redeem the villains by taking the form of Grogar because him releasing them and befriending them would seem out of place and suspicious. It would be fitting with his supposed role of using his chaos magic to bring the good in others (which has been absent since his redemption). But, nope, he only fuck things up because he wanted to boost Twilight's confidence as a ruler of Equestria. 'By freeing the villains and give them stronger magic?' Um, WTF?

The decision to make Coy Glow, a child into a power hungry sociopath is a questionable decision from the writers because of several reasons (actually, more like problems) they didn't think of when they went with this idea. First, who the fuck raised this gremlin and where the hell are they when she was messing shit up? Second, the idea of our 'heroes' sending a literal child to be imprisoned in what is essentially PG hell and later turned into stone is kinda questionable questionable and also kinda stupid for making the people that we root for into assholes.

I'm gonna discuss this topic a lot, because it's kind of a problem with modern animated shows these days. I'm not the only one who notices this, right? There's this recent trend for cartoons to be in a weird combination of mature and epic. To give a brief idea to what the fuck i'm talking about, here's a list of these ideas being combined: the mystery behind characters in Gravity Falls, the lore of the world in Adventure Time, the mature themes in Batman, the anime feel and inspiration in Avatar, the epicness in any anime you watch when you were a dumb kid that still hasn't ended yet, and the whole 'everything is connected' thing in the MCU.

However, this practice in media/series doesn't often work because the writers are at best have no idea how this works and at worst have no clue that these combinations don't go together and as a result, their show is shit. In which, shows that started off as something simple but as the series goes on, things become much more epic and serious. SvtFoE started off as a precious cinnamon roll of a princess coming to live on earth while fighting of monsters, but then it became about racist ancestors living a huge big impact in the past which results in a war. Adventure Time started off about a boy and his magical dog, then it's about a series of lore about each character and story elements. Steven Universe is about a dumb kid and his mother figures protecting earth from monsters and nazis, then it's about that idiot kid befriend the nazis because they're family while dwelling in a fuck ton of vague metaphors because the creator is an idiot that doesn't think of the unfortunate implications her show can bring to children. This problem of a trend made it's way into MLP:FiM.

Seriously, though. When you think of My Little Pony, what is the first thing that came into your mind? If you think of cute adorable pastel colored horses teaching kids basics lessons on life while being pretty, you are correct. If you think of anime references, lore exploration, mature content and epic fight scenes, then you are in need to stop putting your identity into garbage and get that stick our of your ass. MLP:FiM also suffered from those shows i listed above, in which it started off as this unicorn becomes friends with other horses and learns what friendship is all about, then in recent seasons, it's about war, it's about the lore of the world, it's about becoming friends with people who have done terrible and unforgivable things to you and others. Things that aren't what a show about pastel colored ponies is about.

That's the thing about the series' recent seasons as to why they are shit. They also wanted to do these combinations with war, high stakes, fan service and lore, but gave up half way, which is why the season in filled to the brim with boring episodes with repeated plots from previous seasons and episodes, while some episodes retcons certain lessons entirely.

There is no show i have seen in my life, that has taken this sudden and weird direction. It became something that it wasn't meant to be, and the worst part is that the community that it is based on caved onto it and would praise it. regardless of it's obvious problems.

24: The Last Problem (Conclusion)
You know, it's basically obvious that the writers are desperate to end this series and wanted to move onto other projects that they made two separate finales because they're run out of patience to cut out the unnecessary garbage within this season. This final episode entirely feels like the writers just pick certain fanfics, put them into the show entirely out of laziness and desperation to quit the series or to get praise from the bronies to canonizing a headcanon. Either way, they'll still get hate mail and death threats for not selecting 'this' headcanon to be canon, because from what i experienced this season, this is unlikely.

As i stated numerous times, MLP:FiM should have ended season ago. That way we would have any of these unnecessary lore, forced redemptions, terrible lessons and morals. Like what i wrote in my Steven Universe Movie journal, i watched the finale for closure, to see how far the series has come, but it's poor choice within it's writing has made the experience a bit sour.

It's generally noteworthy that when a series has concluded, the fans are quite concerned about the community also ending (again, the fandom and show creators are nearly the same entity). But, the thing is, fandoms don't just die when a series ends. There are still people who rewatch a show because they like it, there are newcomers who went on checking a series out of pure interest and eventually become in love with it. How dense are you guys?

Bonus: Sunset's Backstage Pass and Rainbow Roadtrip
With the main series ending, Equestria Girls has also suffered several problems the shows has, like their usual shtick redeeming villains and being friends with them. However, Backstage Pass seems tamed for the most part. Yeah, they redeemed villains this time again, at least they weren't exactly dangerous or threatening, they just wanted their last concert together to be perfect. Which doesn't mean they are great villains either.

Another note worthy thing in this special is Pinkie's usual shtick of annoying the shit out of people. Pinkie has always been of a problematic character, and whenever she's in a lead role or even the force of the story, all hell breaks loose. These can be seen in episodes like Yakity-Sax where she is making her friends miserable, is told to stop, gets overly depressed about it and her friends enable her behavior of making them even more miserable. The special, while still has her ruin everything every loop until the end, doesn't pull of the Part of One shtick and make her a brat, but instead opts Sunset realizing her mistake and joins in on the fun. Like the antagonists, this not good or bad in a way.

Now, the one thing that everyone wants to talk about; The Dazzlings. Again, like with previous entries about fan favorite characters returning, this one was kinda controversial. Some people say they want them to redeem, others say they wanted to be the villains in the special, which i find understandable, but here's the kicker. Due to DHX's shitty release schedule, they aired the music video of Find the Magic earlier and people thought that the Dazzlings are redeemed in a way. However, in the actual special, they are as villainous as they were back in Rainbow Rocks. They just begrudgingly accept that they are now powerless humans and even admit that their song was about them stuck in the human world without magic. The reason for this confusion of them being 'redeemed' in their music video was because the song's lyrics was too vague (because the song writers don't have Daniel Ingram's balls) to get any context other than the visuals, which is a staple to MLP as of recently. Plus, the idea of the Dazzlings being redeemed doesn't sit well with me. Mainly because they are remembered as villains and having them be another Sunset, or even Starlight only ruins their character. In fact, the best way for them in a similar role to a redeemed villain is to have them placed in a situation where they are forced to ally with the mane 7 while still have their personalities intact, kind of like the Flim Flam Bros where they are still troublemakers in the end.

With all of these problems within the show, it's amazing that Rainbow Roadtrip doesn't succumb to it's overused tropes. The special is a reminiscent of G3's straight-to-DVD movies in which there's no threatening villain who the mane 6 befriends in the end, no, it's a simple story of the mane 6 visiting a town for a festival, finds out shit has happened and decides to investigate on how to fix it. It's something what i missed about MLP, simple slice of life stories about solving conflicts without villains or world building, and that's kind of the issue with MLP recently. All of the focus is more put into the lore and world building, while cool at first are put to shit as they are just there for that and nothing else while simple stories are actually good but very little people care for them.
